The following is an excerpt from my book, 101 Ways To Expand Your Mind.

Trip
For ages people have been using sensory deprivation to gain insight, create vivid visual hallucinations and give their mind a much needed rest.

Now you can do the same thing in the comfort of your own closet!

High Tech

What you’ll need:

1. Earplugs

2. Pillows, Blankets

3. A Timer

4. Closet

Empty out a corner of your closet, just enough space to squeeze your body inside. Pad the space out with pillows and blankets. Pop in your earplugs. If you have any light getting in through under the door of your closet you may want to invest in one of those sleep blindfolds and block out any residual light so your consciousness will plunge into total darkness. Mine came courtesy of JetBlue.

Get comfortable in your space. Arrange the pillows and blankets for insulation and after a few minutes of being still watch your sense of feeling go numb. This is good and desirable.

Set your timer for 30 minutes or longer, depending on how long you want to extend your trip. An hour is ideal.

With earplugs in you’ll block out most ambient noise. It’s good to try this at night or when you know it’s going to be quiet. Turn off the TV, the phone and the lights.

With your sense of sight, hearing and feeling turned off your mind is going to be crying out for stimulus. At first this may be a little uncomfortable. Once you get over that hump, and you’ll know when you do, you’ll start to feel a wave of relaxation wash over you. Your head will clear out.

Some people, after 45 minutes or more, report seeing colors and stunning visuals.

The mind will start producing it’s own stimulus to keep you occupied. This is the fun part.

Glow
After emerging from the deprivation cocoon, you might find your mind and body feeling extremely well rested. This means you’ve done it right and gave your mind the much needed rest it deserves.

Strap in and go for a ride. Best thing to do is watch your mind and observe what feelings, thoughts and/or visions come up for you. Take what you get and have fun!

WARNING: If you’re mentally unstable or are on medication please consult a doctor or mental health professional before depriving your senses. This can be a very powerful experience that should only be undertaken by people with stable mental health. Of course, if you’re mentally unstable chances are you’re not going to take our advice anyway but don’t say we didn’t warn you.
